The second book in Henry Venmore-Rowland’s Rome series is published tomorrow. Hurrah! The Sword and the Throne which will be available in hardback in approximately 7 hours 57 minutes and something seconds follows Henry’s first book in the series, The Last Caesar. In celebration of this, we decided to raise a glass to the young and supremely talented Henry Venmore-Rowland, but not before we bombarded him with a whole lot of random questions about anything and everything…

Do you have a party trick?

I’m not too bad at accents and (some) impressions. Embarrassingly my best is probably Harold Steptoe.

If you didn’t want to be an author when you were growing up, what did you want to be?

When I was sixteen, I was sure I was going to be either Jim Hacker or Sir Humphrey Appleby. As the years went by I became less and less certain.

If you could give your 16 year old self one piece of advice what would it be?

Don’t take your foot off the gas for AS-levels! I can’t give a more profound answer until sixteen becomes a bit more distant I’m afraid…

If you won the lottery today, what would be the first item you purchased?

A country cottage, preferably with a tree-house.

What would be your luxury item if you were stranded on a desert island?

Pen and paper. I’d go mad if I couldn’t scribble ideas and thoughts down while alone all that time.

What is your favourite band and do you listen to music when you write?

Queen, The Who, Rolling Stones, Genesis (before Phil Collins ruined the band) are the favourites. Depends what I’m writing at the time, but Hans Zimmer soundtracks are the best for battle-scenes.

What is your favourite historical fiction drama on television?

Michael Hirst’s new Vikings series on LoveFilm

Who would win in a fight between Spartacus and Ned Stark?

I just had to google Ned Stark. I’ve been watching a lot of TV pilots for work and I’m not allowing myself to watch Game of Thrones yet in case I get hooked. Sean Bean’s Sharpe would beat Michael Douglas’ Spartacus I reckon.

What is your favourite biscuit and are you a dunker?

Jaffa cakes, and if they don’t count then those Golden Crunch ones. I’m not a dunker.

If you were given an all expenses paid trip, which destination would you travel to?

India. All of it.

Henry Venmore-Rowland’s Rome novel, The Sword and the Throne, is published by Bantam Press tomorrow and available to buy for £14.99.

It’s the most controversial paperback to hit the shelves this year; The Chocolate Money is BACK with a brand new cover, ready to divide opinion once more. This fantastic novel is like the literary version of marmite – with some (like me) obsessed with Ashley Prentice Norton’s bittersweet portrayal of an incredibly dysfunctional and rather warped relationship between m0ther and daughter.

This is simply a MUST READ. Darkly funny, shocking and utterly compulsive, it’s time to take a bite out of Ashely’s Gossip Girl gone bad debut, and we’re giving away one copy… Further information about this outrageous coming of age novel and our competition can be found below.

August, 1978. Chicago.

Shopping at Saks, summers in the Riviera, cruising down Lake Shore Drive in a toffee-coloured stretch limo…

For ten year old Bettina, this is what’s normal. She’s grown up as the heiress to one of America’s biggest fortunes – and in the shadow of her dangerously hedonistic mother Babs. Babs plays by nobody’s rules: naked Christmas cards, lavish theme parties at her Lake Shore Drive penthouse, nocturnal visits from her married lover, while his wife sleeps at their nearby home.

At fifteen, Bettina escapes to a prestigious New England boarding school, desperate to become her own person and fit in to her preppy new world. But, the lessons taught to her by Babs about how to manipulate men, control your friends and host Naughty Nautical fancy dress parties suddenly don’t seem to be much help. Finding her freedom is more difficult than Bettina ever could have imagined.

THE COMPETITION

We’re giving away one copy of The Chocolate Money in paperback to one lucky winner! To be in with a chance of winning this brilliant book in paperback simply answer the following question in the comment box below:

In what year is The Chocolate Money set?

The very lovely Naomi Mantin is currently interning with us here at Transworld. Not only has Naomi been helping us enourmously in the publicity department, but she’s also been swatting up on some of our books. Here’s what she thought about Kate Atkinson’s latest novel, Life After Life.

*

When I found out (a little embarrassingly late to the party) that Kate Atkinson had a new book out, I was giddy with excitement. What crazy scrapes will Jackson Brodie be getting up to now, I wondered, what wonderful web of plotlines and mystery has Atkinson come up with this time?

And then I realised it wasn’t another in the Jackson Brodie series, and I got a bit panicky. As a girl who has, without fail, eaten the same cereal every single day since about 2001 and has owned the same rucksack for an unacceptable amount of time, I suppose you could say I am bit of a creature of habit. And although I loved Kate’s first novel, the Whitbread (now Costa) Book of the Year Behind the Scenes at the Museum, I really have fallen in love with her detective series. What makes Case Histories, One Good Turn, When Will There Be Good News? and, most recently, Started Early, Took My Dog all so truly addictive are Atkinson’s extraordinary eye for detail. She intricately braids together a number of characters and storylines in almost Dickensian fashion so that what seems like a straightforward murder mystery becomes something much, much more complex – each book reads almost like a kind of psychological study of the human condition. Could I really cope with a change? Would Atkinson’s Life After Life really deliver in the same way?

In a word, yes. It is, quite simply, gorgeous.

Life After Life follows Ursula Todd’s multiple attempts at one life. Spanning the first half of the twentieth century in unapologetically vivid detail, the book toys with the question: What if you had the chance to live your life again and again until you finally got it right? Starting from her birth in 1910, we are taken through Ursula’s life (and death) what feels like a million times over, each time down another tiny little fork. We are shown heartbreaking, elating and sometimes hysterical consequences of each miniscule decision that she makes, and each time we learn a new shade of her character and the people around her.

And what a character she is. Here, we see Atkinson at her best, layering detail upon detail, imperfections and little turns of phrases so delicately that Ursula, and indeed all of the Todd Family, come alive. The book is so hard to put down because it lives and breathes. At times, this sense of the ‘real’ is almost unbearable; it is especially evident in Atkinson’s unflinching descriptions of life (and, worse, death) in the Second World War, and her treatment of violence against women – a theme that refuses to go away throughout the book.

Arguably, the cyclical structure of the book and the endless repetition could have the danger of becoming contrived and formulaic, it is the vitality of Atkinson’s writing that keeps Life After Life fresh. And clever. Like all good books, you will find yourself thinking about the questions the text raises days after you’ve read it. And, if you are anything like me, you will gush.

It’s not every day that a twenty year old student from Ireland writes a novel which later gets published. But that’s exactly what happened to the truly lovely Emily Gillmor Murphy whose book You & I was published in paperback by Transworld Ireland yesterday. A brilliant story about the relationship between students Tom and Olive, You & I captures the contrasts of the haves versus the have-nots and the worldly versus the innocent. This is an assured debut that will transport readers straight to the rollercoaster experience of growing up and falling in love.

In celebration of publishing You & I in paperback we asked author Emily Gillmor Murphy a bazillion and one questions about her new book. So, while we raise a glass, eat cake and have a post publication jolly at Transworld towers, make sure to read Emily’s wise words below about what it’s like writing at such a young age.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I have always loved reading and writing. Reading or writing a great story is one of the most exciting things for me. But when I was younger I suffered from dyslexia and because of this I never really believed I could make a career out of my writing. When I started writing You and I, it was merely something that I was doing for myself. I love writing and I get a great satisfaction out of it, even if no one else ever sees it. As I got older my confidence grew and with encouragement from my family, I decided it was time to get myself and my work out there. Looking back, it was terrifying to have my work, which was so personal and vulnerable to me, judged by strangers, but it was the best decision I have ever made.

What was the biggest challenge you faced writing You & I?

When I started writing You and I, I was afraid that people wouldn’t understand what I was trying to say. At first I was hesitant to trust myself but I soon realized that I had to. I threw myself completely into this novel. I took my own emotions, insecurities and flaws and put them on the page in front of me. I really wanted to write an honest portrayal of what it is like to be an Irish College student, so I made sure to not hold anything back. Putting yourself into your work is a very vulnerable thing, but I do believe it is what a writer has to do to be great.

You wrote You & I whilst studying at university in Dublin, how much inspiration for the characters did you take from your friends?

I would never write down my friend’s lives and try to sell it as fiction. But the people around me, friends, family and strangers, are the best inspiration any writer can have. I meet someone and they intrigue me, there’s a base for a character. But then I break down that base; I rework it, manipulate it and build it back up again until I have something that is completely new and wonderfully individual. The people around me merely kick off my imagination, by the time I have finished writing a character, they have a life of their own.

How did you fit writing around your studying? Did you have a writing schedule or was there a time of day you always wrote during?

To this day, I still don’t have a regular writing schedule. I keep a note pad with me at all times and jot down ideas and inspiration whenever they may come. At the moment I am currently doing a Masters at Trinity College Dublin, I’m lucky that this Masters is very independent and it allows me time to write, so with a bit of luck I get a few hours of writing done every day. But while I was in my undergraduate in UCD, my class timetable was completely erratic, which meant my writing schedule was completely erratic also. I kept my laptop with me at all times and whenever I had time to myself, even if it was just a fifteen minute break, I wrote. It seems like a stressful way to do it but I actually loved it. Writing is fun for me and I was always excited to get back to it, once I got away from my college work.

What was your personal experience in getting You & I published like?

Getting published was completely shocking for me. I couldn’t believe that there are people out there who actually wanted to read my story. Marianne Gunn O’Connor, my literary agent, is an absolutely wonderful woman and I owe my success to her completely. I approached her with a very early draft of You and I when I was 20 years old and she instantly fell in love with it. Marianne negotiated a two book deal with Random House Publishing and everything has just really taken off from there. Everyone I have come across from Random House and Transworld has been so kind and supportive that I feel absolutely blessed to be working with them. I know I’m incredibly lucky to have gotten published, but the magnitude of it did not sink in until after it happened and only now I’m starting to really enjoy it all.

What did your friends and family think when you told them that you were being published?

My friends were so shocked when I told them I was getting published. Mostly because, other than my immediate family, nobody knew that I wrote at all. I’m so incredibly private about my unfinished work, perhaps it’s an insecurity, but I don’t show my work to anyone except my editors and agent. In fact, Marianne, my literary agent was the first person ever to read my manuscript of You and I. But even when I got my publishing deal, I only told my close friends, afraid that something might happen and it wouldn’t be published. So when the book was officially released and my name started appearing in magazines and newspapers, most of the people who knew me were in complete shock. It was only after I saw ‘You and I’ on bookshelves did I realize it was all real.

What advice can you give to other aspiring young writers?

Don’t try and write a story that you think will sell books. Instead write the story that means something to you. Write the story that is bubbling up inside of you so much that you have no choice but to put it down on paper. Be brave and bold, break the boundaries and try to do something that has never been done before. And most importantly be passionate and vulnerable with your writing. All great writers throw themselves fully into their writing so make sure you do the same.

What are you reading at the moment and are there any Irish authors who you are excited about at the moment?

I’m currently reading The Woman Who Went To Bed For A Year by Sue Townsend. I picked it up at the airport because I knew it would be a funny read but I’ve been really impressed at how thought provoking it is and I’m excited to see how it will all end. There is an amazing playwright in Ireland named Louise Lowe, I went to her production of The Boys of Foley Street and I was completely blown away. I’ve never experienced anything like her work before; it was so wonderfully innovative and exciting. Leanne Waters is a wonderful, young, Irish author. Her first book My Secret Life: A Memoir of Bulimia, is the true story of her struggles with bullying, eating disorders and body image. It’s a gripping and heartbreaking read and I would encourage everyone to read it.

Are you currently writing and do you have any second novel works in progress?

I am currently working on a few different projects, one of them being my second novel for Random House and Transworld. My novel, which is currently untitled, is about the cruel and competitive world of the Irish showjumping scene. I’m a show jumper myself so once again I am writing from experience. I want to portray the struggles, heartbreak, love and drive it takes to reach the top in a world where everything could be lost in a moment.

Who ever said Tuesday afternoons were dull!? Today at Transworld HQ our fantastic author, Jo Baker, visited us for some champagne, jelly and scrumptious cake before answering our questions about her new novel Longbourn.

In case you haven’t yet heard about Longbourn let me refresh your memory… Longbourn IS the servants’ story of Pride and Prejudice…

Longbourn by Jo Baker

If Elizabeth Bennet had the washing of her own petticoats, Sarah thought, she would be more careful not to trudge through muddy fields.

It is wash-day for the housemaids at Longbourn House, and Sarah’s hands are chapped and bleeding. Domestic life below stairs, ruled tenderly and forcefully by Mrs Hill the housekeeper, is about to be disturbed by the arrival of a new footman smelling of the sea, and bearing secrets.

For in Georgian England, there is a world the young ladies in the drawing room will never know, a world of poverty, love, and brutal war.

***

Our social T-room was decorated with mounds of mouthwatering sweet nibbles as well as flutes of champagne and lemonade. The walls were decorated with vintage silhouette faces and our Transworld clock displayed the Longbourn jacket image at every hour.

When we weren’t pestering Jo with our burning questions, she took her time reading aloud from Longbourn and discussing her Pride and Prejudice influences with book editor, Jane Lawson.

It has started. Yes, I’m talking about the summer. Yes, I’m probably tempting fate. But with the prospect of a delicious outdoor picnic finally on the horizon, I think it’s about time we began discussing some of the HOTTEST paperbacks to look out for over the next few months.

Imagine sitting on a blanket, soaking up the summer sun, scoffing a scotch egg and a carrot stick smothered in houmous, sipping on some bubbly and cracking the spine of your brand spanking new book after a week in the office…there, that DOES sound nice doesn’t it? (Unless you don’t like scotch eggs, carrot sticks or houmous that is…). Yes, we’ve some truly fantastic fiction and non-fiction paperbacks to help whittle away your lazy summer day, so STOP whatever else you’re doing right now and make sure to give your full and undivided attention to our hot list of paperbacks mentioned below. Seriously, one of these stories could be your literary soundtrack to the summer. But which one?

***

You & I by Emily Gillmor-Murphy

Each September, thousands of students walk through the doors of University College and Trinity College, Dublin. This year, Olive and Tom will be among them.

Eighteen-year-old Olive is fresh from the country, and her eyes are opened wide by the big-city goings on of her new friends. When she starts to be pursued by Tom, the scruffy maverick who’s seduced half the girls she’s met, she’s adamant he’s not for her. But when a tragedy befalls her family, it’s Tom who proves her best friend – until that is, she discovers his real motivations.

Tom has never thought further than the next party, the next girl, the next drink. But now, with his own broken family about to cast him off and his social habits spinning out of control, he seems to have destroyed his relationship with Olive. What started out as a stupid dare metamorphoses into something much more serious.

Set against the backdrop of youth on the brink of adulthood, and capturing the contrasts of the haves versus the have-nots, the worldly versus the innocent, Emily Gillmor Murphy’s YOU AND I is an assured debut that will transport readers straight to the rollercoaster experience of growing up and falling in love.

At fifteen, Bettina escapes to New England and an exclusive, preppy boarding school called Cardiss, where she hopes she can finally start to figure out who she really is. But while she thinks that fitting in with the other students represents her best chance of surviving the cliques and politics of Cardiss, soon she’s making choices that show that Babs’ maternal shadow still looms long over her.
Prepare to meet the real McFly …

In 2003, Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter came together and formed what would become one of the most popular and successful bands in the UK. Just teenagers at the time, they were catapulted into the limelight and had to adapt quickly to their new-found fame – and everything that came with it. Now, at last, they have decided to tell their story, in full and revealing detail.

Speaking with candour and their trademark humour, Tom, Danny, Harry and Dougie share both the stories of their own lives and that of McFly. They give their personal insights into their contrasting childhoods, the individual paths that led them to the band, the struggles they have each overcome, their love lives and, of course, their music.

Packed with previously untold stories, a lot of laughter and the occasional tear,Unsaid Things offers a privileged look into the lives of four guys who started out as bandmates and became best friends. Their unique camaraderie radiates from every page and by the end of the book, you’ll know them almost as well as they know each other …

Carly and her little sister Jen are walking. Something terrible has happened. Something that has left Carly in charge, her faith in humanity shattered. She knows they need help. But she is terrified of her sister being taken away from her. All they have is each other.

Carly wants them to find their way back to the last person she knew she could trust – their stepfather. But Jen holds a secret about him which, if she’s telling the truth, will put them both at far more risk than they could imagine.

And so begins a journey, across hundreds of miles, which neither girl could have anticipated. It isn’t an easy one, and is often dangerous.
Lausanne, Switzerland.

In the cathedral tower lives a strange boy with a limp who talks to the bells.

In a luxury penthouse lives a high-class prostitute who’s in mortal danger.

And in a low-rent hotel lives a private investigator who has no idea how he got there.

Jay Harper finds himself in Switzerland on the trail of a missing Olympic athlete. A hard drinker, he can barely remember how he got home last night, let alone why he accepted this job. When he meets the stunning but aloof Katherine in a hotel bar, he quickly realises that he’s not the only one in town who’s for hire. She’s a high-class hooker who can’t believe her luck. Which is about to change. For the worse.

In the meantime, Marc Rochat spends his time in the belfry talking to the statues, his cat and the occasional ghost. His job is to watch over Lausanne at night and to wait for the angel his mother told him he’d one day have to save. When he sees Katherine, he thinks his moment has come. Which indeed it has. But not in a good way…

Jon Steele was born in the American west and worked as an award winning cameraman/editor for ITN for more than twenty years. He has travelled and worked through seventy-eight countries across six continents. War Junkie, his autobiography of a life behind the camera in some of the worst places on earth, was published in 2002 by Transworld and has become a cult classic of war reportage.

In 2003, while in Baghdad at the start of the Iraq war, he became disillusioned with television news, put his camera on the ground and quit. He hid out in a small village in the south of France, writing and taking long walks in quiet places. He went back alone to Iraq in 2008 and lived for three months with an American combat unit, recording their lives for the breakthrough documentary film, The Baker Boys: Inside the Surge.

He currently lives in Switzerland with his Jordanian-born wife and their two cats, Zeus and Zorro.

London, UK– May 29th 2013 – Random House UK has today launched stage one of the BLACK CROWN Project, an infectious new kind of narrative gaming experience.

Available now at www.blackcrownproject.com, BLACK CROWN marks Random House’s first move into gaming as it seeks ways to broaden the platforms it publishes on.

Written by debut author Rob Sherman, players of BLACK CROWN join the shady Widsith Institute as clerks, whose work is managed through the application of bespoke diseases, to facilitate the task of categorising and analysing the Institute’s archive of diaries and journals, belonging to the world’s greatest explorers, those who travel beyond the edge of the world.

Over the course of the story, users will begin to learn about the mysterious figure of the Miasma Eremite, who journeyed to the town of Loss, through the exploration of numerous bizarre objects and documents brought back to the Institute from its singular civilization.

Prepare for a weird and wildly imaginative experience, as you don the Dutch Frame, meet the mysterious clerk Wayle, confront the terrifying Shushbaby, descend to the Marvel Ouse and begin to uncover the nefarious Black Crown project.

The narrative will be an organic process, updated and added to in several stages after stage one’s month-long running time.

“Black Crown represents Random House’s ambition to push the boundaries in online storytelling, experiment with new business models and launch a debut author in a groundbreaking way,” says Dan Franklin, Digital Publisher, Random House Group. “Rob Sherman is a superb writer and a rare talent, and I’m delighted to be publishing him in this way.”

Black Crown is powered by Failbetter Games’ Storynexus platform, with bespoke functionality created for the Black Crown project. Additional Miasma features developed by Popleaf.

The entire project will be free-to-play, with opportunities for eager users to make micropayments to unlock story strands, expedite the narrative, and acquire items and status within the world.

For further reading, download the Institute’s latest documents, MOUR MOUR MOUR and LINCOLN’S BEDSHEET from all good ebook retailers.

Robert Sherman was born in Oxford sometime in the late twentieth century, and was brought to London in a car, he imagines. He attended Exeter University and completed a Masters in Creative Writing. He has since worked reading manuscripts, writing plays, poetry, music, screenplays and imaginary videogames (until now).
