Freshly graduated and hooked on the idea of a career in publishing – like many in my position, I was eager to know how to get into the super demanding industry! I knew it was time to get a solid couple of weeks experience in a specific department and I was thrilled when I managed to secure a work experience role at Transworld Publicity. In my first week, I automatically realised the fantastic energy and dynamics of working in publicity. The buzz of the Paul O Grady book launch mixed with Wiley Cash’s excellent win at the CWA Dagger Awards was a really inspirational throw into how much of a difference a hard working publicity team could make. I got to grips with the departmental procedures and its contribution to the publishing process; I assisted in researching, writing press releases and I attended both internal meetings and an in-house book group. I really enjoyed the office atmosphere where networking and communicating is key.
It was during my two weeks that I also discovered a previously closeted love for crime fiction; the friendly team introduced me to some enthralling crime novels, including Wiley Cash’s A Land More Kind Than Home and SJ Watson’s Before I Go To Sleep. Overall, I have had a brilliant experience in the publicity department at Transworld; these two weeks have given me a greater understanding of the industry and an encouraging insight to the specific department which I am even more determined to get into!
