Wednesday night at the Haymarket Hotel had it all. Aussie life guards, Drag Queens, a tranquil blue swimming pool and the biggest oysters Jason Donovan had ever seen. The celebration for Kathy Lette’s new book To Love, Honour and Betray (Till Divorce Us Do Part) was the living version of Carmen Miranda’s famous head-dress. Fruity, fun and downright delicious.
The party, sponsored by the lovely people at Tourism New South Wales went with a splash. Kathy, dressed in iridescent blue to match the tranquil swimming pool at her Australian themed party, was joined by other famous Australians Dannii Minogue and Jason Donovan as well as our own home-grown and international talent Ian McEwan, Sir John Mortimer, Ronnie Ancona, Rory Bremner, Jon Snow and Ruby Wax. You couldn’t swing a boomerang for fear of hitting the celebrity elite.
With a seafood bar to die for, well-oiled muscular life-guards (not that I noticed), cocktails and the stunning and irrepressible Globe Girls a good time was had by all. A perfectly fitting tribute to a really hilarious read.
Special mention has to be made of The Globe Girls, a drag queen troupe so talented and entertaining, (and all with legs that any girl would kill for!), that Cabarat will never be the same again.
(See clip below for one of the three sets they performed over the course of the evening!)
