News Terry Pratchett comes to the Southbank (written by his biggest fan!)

Posted by Lynsey on May 30, 2008 at 11:35 am

Just because I love this picture!

Bestselling author, comedic genius and all round God of fantasy writing, Terry Pratchett is going to be stopping off at Foyles on the Southbank for a book signing session on the 14th June.

It is a well-known fact that I am (I’d love to claim to be the only one but there are many of us) Terry Pratchett’s biggest fan so this is going in my calendar in every shade of permanent ink known to mankind. (And August 16th as TP will be at the Edinburgh Festival!) (And not forgetting the Discworld Convention) So realistically my calendar’s pretty much ruined with ink (which is a shame as it’s a Discworld calendar).

Terry will be at Foyles from 12 noon to 2:30pm on the 14th June which is fast approaching. I would recommend arriving with time to spare as a good place in the queue is always morally uplifting and if not you can console yourselves with the beautiful vista that is the Thames from the Southbank.

It’s a maximum sign of 4 books per customer, so before you haul all of your 36 Discworld novels into your suitcase marked for London not to mention all the unmissable tie in’s I would suggest a careful analysis of all of their merits, meticulously choosing the four titles that have meant the most to you throughout your reading career. On the other hand you could do what I’m doing, using the scientifically proven eeny meeney miney mo method of selection. It works every time. Keep checking back for more Pratchett news, it’s the 25th Anniversary of the Discworld this year so exciting things are happening!

I’ll see you there.

News The Damage Done by Peter Woolf

Posted by Sally on May 21, 2008 at 11:37 am

When career criminal and opportunist thief Peter Woolf broke into the house of Will Riley in 2006, he would have never been able to predict the chain of events that occurred as a consequence. Thanks to two incredible organisations ‘Restorative Justice’ and ‘SmartJustice’ as well as a number of outstanding individuals Peter Woolf chose to turn his back on a life of drugs and crime and has lived to tell his fascinating story.

The Damage Done is the story of Peter’s life on the criminal borders of East London and how a meeting with his last victim Will Riley, arranged by Restorative Justice, transformed his outlook on crime and dramatically changed his life forever.

The following film ‘The Woolf Within’ by Matt Crocker of Level Films gives an incredible insight into the possibilities that organisations such as Restorative Justice, SmartJustice and RAPT have to offer for seemingly unyielding offenders.

We have two copies of the book signed by both Peter and Will to give away. If you have been affected and uplifted by Peters story and would like a copy of the book then email us and let us know why you believe you should have a copy.

News Signed First Edition of Nothing to Lose to give away!!

Posted by Lynsey on May 19, 2008 at 11:58 am

Lee Child signing Nothing to LoseTo celebrate best-selling author Lee Child’s double number 1 in the best-seller lists for Nothing to Lose in hardback and Bad Luck and Trouble in paperback we prevailed upon the noble Lee to sign a copy of Nothing to Lose.

The sole intention of this act was so we could charitably give it away to the hordes (hopefully) of Between the Lines readers.

So if you are a fan of Jack Reacher, and love Lee Child’s work or know of someone who would really, REALLY appreciate a signed first edition, just send your name and address (anywhere in the world) to the following email: betweenthelines@transworld-publishers.co.uk.

We will find a thoroughly diplomatic way of choosing a winner and let you know presently who that lucky star of a person is!

Good luck!

Interviews / Q&A Ariana Franklin’s award-winning experience at the CWA!

Posted by Lynsey on May 16, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Ariana Franklin’s book Mistress of the Art of Death deservedly won the 2007 Crime Writer’s Association Ellis Peter’s Historical Novel Award. Read here her thoughts and feelings on being an award-winner!

Ariana Franklin:

Having been married for a long time to a certain Barry Norman who appeared on BBC TV for twenty-six years as its award-winning film critic, I’m used to being trampled in the rush to get his autograph. It suits me; I’m nervous of the limelight, I like staying in our quiet Hertfordshire village and writing.

So it was odd to find my first medieval thriller “Mistress of the Art of Death” nominated for the Ellis Peters Historical Award. Those who know and love me well, like Francesca Liversidge, my editor at Transworld, and Mike Ripley, a fellow thriller novelist, said: “Strong competition. You haven’t a chance, just go to the ceremony and enjoy it.”

It was kind of them. I mean that. If I’d known they secretly expected “Mistress” to win which, apparently, they did, I’d have been in a bad way. As it was, Barry and I toddled up to London prepared to have a nice evening among the pleasant company of publishers, writers and PR people.

So there we were happily swigging back the champagne, pausing only to listen politely to the speeches, when the announcement came: “And the winner is….Ariana Franklin.”

Francesca, Mike and Transworld friends were jumping up and down. Barry shouted, hugged me, restored my dropped chin to its place and pointed me in the direction of the rostrum to receive the three thousand pound prize

Trouble was, I’d been so confident of not winning; I hadn’t even prepared an acceptance speech. I think I just thanked everybody in sight, said how grateful I was to Transworld and the Ellis Peters committee – which I am — and staggered off. Francesca took us all for a celebratory dinner before my husband and I caught the train home, singing

An award is quite a business… The fact that you’ve won one gets the fact plastered on the jacket of your next book. Other people’s books are sent to you so that, if you like them, your praise gets plastered over their jackets. You’re invited to literary festivals, crime-fests, reading groups, asked to write for blogs like this one. Busy, busy, busy – and still with another book of your own to get down to.

Truly, truly, I’m not complaining. I am a fortunate and grateful woman.

It’s just very odd.

News Johnny Kingdom let loose!

Posted by Samantha on May 10, 2008 at 2:53 pm

bambi and meIntrepid reporter Rachel Moore went on a very special assignment as part of her work experience at Transworld, scouting out the Loose Women studios alongside press officer Polly Andrews and the legendary Johnny Kingdom.  This is what she had to say about her adventure.

“The presenters of ITV’s hugely popular lifestyle show Loose Women are known for quick-witted banter with their guests. However, when a fully camouflaged Johnny Kingdom arrives at Paddington station you get the feeling that it is Johnny who is being let loose to charm the ITV crew today.

Johnny has an infectious enthusiasm, particularly for the subject of his latest book Bambi and Me, which documents the story of Bambi the abandoned deer that Johnny rescued and reared. Before filming Johnny shares some wildlife tales with the ITV researchers and (when he finally pauses for breath!) he is briefed on the Loose Women topics of the day. The room is buzzing as previous X Factor contestant Chico, also appearing on the show, creates quite a stir amongst the Kingdom family. Within minutes of meeting Chico is on the phone to Johnny’s granddaughter and planning a trip on one of Johnny’s infamous Exmoor Safaris, testament that Johnny can inspire anyone to become a wildlife fan!

Audio / Visual Small World hits the Big Screen

Posted by Lynsey on May 2, 2008 at 10:19 am

For those of us who have been sitting under a rock for the last 6 months (it does provide good shade) and therefore may have missed the launch of The Book Video Awards by The Random House Group I submit the following.

In conjunction with The Bookseller, PLAY.com and The National Film and Television School, the clever bods at NFTS made one of our favourite books it’s very own trailer. The book is Small World by Matt Beaumont which is appearing in a store near you in paperback on the 14th August and the hardback is out now.

But are trailers for books a good idea? We definitely think so and are keen to hear your thoughts on the subject, so comment away!

Ladies and Gentleman, I now present to you, the all-singing, all-dancing magical phenomenon that is SMALL WORLD!!!

Feature A Book at the Beeb

Simon Mayo’s Book of the Month – A Mile of River by Judith Allnatt.

A Mile of River

Judith Allnatt’s fantastic debut novel A Mile of River was deservedly chosen as Simon Mayo’s Book of the Month on Radio 5 Live.  We asked Judith to keep a diary of her day out at the Beeb as she joined a panel of guests on the Simon Mayo show including one Will Self . . .

“Before the show starts, I take a photo of the Tardis for my daughter. It stands on a roof at the BBC as if it has just landed – a doorway to new possibilities. I imagine the interior, full of levers, buttons and alien technology.

Entering the studio feels similarly surreal: the room dimly lit, flickering monitors and banks of switches. I join Simon Mayo at a round table. In front of me is the yellow foam bulb of a microphone and a red light that’s marked, alarmingly, MIC ON.

The reviewers: Helen Dunning, Boyd Hilton and Joel Morris, take their places with a practiced air and Will Self, whose latest novel is also to be reviewed, folds his tall frame into the small space. Imposing in more ways than one: novelist, journalist, city walker, satirist and man of letters, I wonder what he will make of my novel, a coming-of-age story set on a Midland dairy farm. My headphones are too big but it’s too late to adjust them; we are ON AIR. I hold them on to stop them slipping down to my jaw. I am a radio virgin. Read the rest of this entry »
